A blue-collar slice-of-life, "Five Easy Pieces" is an emotional portrait of middle-American isolation backed with strong performances.

I felt like the plot of this film was all over the place and for about the first half of it, I wasn't sure I was into the movie, despite its critical acclaim. The film wins me over by the end with its two powerhouse performances (it is, after all, a film that is more about people than plot): Nicholson's regretful, desperate washed up pianist and Karen Black's unhinged, clingy girlfriend character. These performances are what eventually makes the film stick with you after closing.

Five Easy Pieces review

A film that revolves around the adventures of Bobby Dupea (Jack Nicholson). Palm Apodaca was the only supporting character that was interesting and yet only with little screen time. Screenplay was good with lines: "I move around a lot, not because I'm looking for anything really, but 'cause I'm getting away from things that get bad if I stay." and "If a person has no love for himself, no respect for himself, no love of his friends, family, work, something - how can he ask for love in return? I mean, why should he ask for it?" This felt like Easy Rider but definitely less engaging. Same in a sense that the main lead is searching for answers and grimaces at how society acts. Five Easy Pieces is not an easy watch, but is worth seeing a young Jack Nicholson work his way to stardom.
