I like John Carpenter's "Vampires" as long as I don't look for anything more inside of it than there is. The underrated Kathryn Bigelow horror/neo-western "Near Dark" is certainly better, but this one's fun too.

I think this is the point where John Carpenter just made whatever he wanted and he was okay with it.

Lame post-Buffy vampire flick made well after Carpenter's star had well and truly waned. Humourless and stupid with feeble set pieces and dialogue like "A master vampire who can walk in daylight. Unstoppable. Unless we stop him." But it's still a hundred times better than Ghosts Of Mars...

now to be honest, when I was a kid I used to rent this film all the time from my hollywood video store.and I must say,i've always loved this film.it's not Carpenter's best, but it's not a miss either.some people disliked this film, well I actually liked it.I found it to be original and entertaining.the characters are all geat in they're own way.James Woods is of course amazing in this film.Daniel Baldwin gives us a great performance.I also consider this film to be one of the great vampire films, not the best, but one of the greates.

A vampire film that doesn't have enough bite. John Carpenter is always hit or miss, and this is a miss. The cast tries their best, but in the end it doesn't have enough action or drama to keep it anything more than mildly interesting.

Action: 1.5/3 + Comedy: 1/2 + Good vs Evil: 1/1 + Love/Sex: 0.5/1 + Special Effects: 0.5/1 + Plot: 0.5/1 + Music: 1/1 = 6/10 or 60%. John Carpenter's Vampires begins and ends with promise, while James Woods keeps it above water with an inspired take on the Catholic Church's Master Slayer of Vampires throughout. The in-betweens are far more schlok inspired rather than scary and the overall product can certainly be described as an introduction to the male take on Buffy, with the Catholic Church stepping in as the Watchers.
