Before he was obsessed with CGI spectacles, Wolfgang Peterson made this masterpiece - a claustrophobic look into submarine warfare. The understated directorial approach brings out some marvelous performances from the cast and the tight quarters of the submarine add tension to every scene. A little long, but worth every second.

Powerful and extremely gripping portrayal of life aboard a German U-Boat in 1942 during the Battle of the Atlantic. Claustrophobic and panic inducing, Das Boot is a remarkable achievement and the finest Submarine war film ever. Capturing all the horror and fear faced by ordinary man entrapped in what is basically an "iron coffin"; this movie takes the viewer on an unrelenting trip to the edge of insanity. One of the finest German movies ever made, Das Boot is a worthy testament to the skills of director Wolfgang Peterson and as realistic a war movie as your ever likely to see.

Spectacular is the definition for this film that took Petersen to the subgenre of making sea-flicks. He's good at it (no with poseido, though) and you can see it here because you actually can feel how they felt down there. There are memorable moments of tension and characters performances. The King of submarines films. Don't miss it!
