Honest and personal, but something feels just a bit off.

Dreckige Witze

An 'Obvious' Recommendation
Unknown - wrote on 07/28/2014
I hesitate to label 'Obvious Child' as a 'romantic comedy'. The story is one that seems to fit into that category, but the film tells it in such a way that completely deviates from the typical formula. The characters are often relatable and the outcome of the situations lean in slight towards realism. Natural awkwardness shines through Jenny Slate's performance. I laughed along with her and understood her pains. The comedy comes out of the dramatic situations, much like how Slate's character gets her stand-up routines from events in her personal life. The jokes are a mixed bag. I didn't laugh much at the few stand-up segments, but I did enjoy some unexpected humor amongst the quieter moments. I like the route this story takes. It goes to a couple of areas most in this genre do …

Not So Obvious Pick

Saw it for free, which really is the only way to catch it. Jenny Slate is not the typical leading lady and really I'd be surprised if I saw any film with her in it again. She wasn't horrible, but not that great either. The jokes were sometimes funny, but relied on a lot of humor related to bodily functions. Overall, not very interested in it. Almost worth it to watch , but only because it was free. I might see another film by Gillian Robespierre if she gets better actors. Also Jenny Slate and her BFF looked too similar to each other. Would have worked if they were sisters. The mother character was semi-good. Thankfully the focus wasn't on the abortion, but that's where the story was heading. Better luck next time for everyone involved in this film. 5.5/10
