Cate Blanchett is very good as the title character. The movie around her aspires to be the same. But it doesn't quite succeed. For one thing, the first half is very slow. There's plot points telegraphed well in advance so you're just waiting for the characters to figure it out. A second issue is that a lot of these characters aren't very likable. Some film genres complement the presence of unsympathetic characters like in a horror film or a crime drama. But for an ensemble film that advertises itself as a quirky indie flick, it comes across as pretentious and it's off-putting.

Richard Linklater's decade-long winning streak comes to an end with "Where'd You Go, Bernadette?," a quirky enough comedy with lots of pieces that fail to come together in its completion.
