The story focuses on two groups of treasure hunters in Egypt, searching for the legendary 'City of the Dead'. Brendan Fraser is terrific as Rick O'Connell, the wise-cracking American ex-foreign legion soldier who knows the way to Hamanauptra, an ancient city, fabled to hold the treasure of the Pharaoh Seti I (father of Ramses the Great). Rachel Weisz plays the adventurous heroine Evelyn Carnahan, librarian turned archaeologist who has found the key that will open the book of Ra, an ancient text with occult powers.
Eventually they find the book and read several passages aloud, with horrifying results. Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) is awakened after 3000 years and is on a quest to gain power and revive his lost love, Anck Su Namun. To accomplish this, he must first kill the men who found the book and sacrifice Evelyn. It is now up to O'Connell, Jonathan, and a mysterious cult leader to stop the mummy before his reign of terror spreads over the world.
Arnold Vosloo as the Mummy is strong, quick, powerful, and has plenty of tricks up the proverbial sleeve, and really is just plain downright menacing. Jonathon (John Hannah) is excellent comic relief as well as (Kevin J. O'Connor) devious Beni, the little weasel in league with Imhotep. The dialog is very fun and very tongue in cheek and I found myself drooling over was Ardeth Bay (Oded Fehr). This may not be a really scary movie but it does deliver lots of thrills.
