An American Classic.

This brilliant seventies gem based off the novel of the same name by Ira Levin is definitely one of the best American horror films. With an exceptional cast, masterful direction and a tight, powerful script this film definitely is a fine example of how it has done. Very little is shown onscreen and the horror is dependent on Farrow's performance. This is one of those movies that doesn't quite have the same impact when you are young but as you age the movie takes on nuance and depth. Another stand out is the music score and how it manages to deliver the right mixture of beauty and creepiness. Basically, there are very few weaknesses to the film and there is something very powerful about how the very basic instinct of motherhood can used against you.
