A sensationalized but nevertheless gripping action thriller that remains uncomfortable and sometimes frightening to watch in a post 9/11 world. Its key flaw is that it can never find the right balance to avoid slipping into the xenophobia that the script does try to condemn. Denzel Washington, Bruce Willis, and Annette Bening all deliver good performances. While the big set-pieces and the promised hook of a NYC under martial law is engrossing, the political intrigue only muddies the already confused screenplay.
