Review - Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)

John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone), now in a prison camp, was visited one day by Col. Trautman (Richard Crenna) asking for him to back into action. Not one to refuse such an offer, Rambo comes back guns a-blazing in “Rambo: First Blood Part II.”
What happened, Stallone? The first “Rambo” movie was so good. What happened to make this one so awful? I can only assume this was made for the obvious revenue because there’s just no excuse for the script. Granted, it is a very entertaining movie and you do get your money’s worth, so to speak, but as a film it pales compared to “First Blood.”
There’s lots of violence and war going on with very little plot. Rambo goes in. Rambo kills. Rambo tries to get out. That’s seriously all there is to it. The rest of the movie just has Rambo going around killing people, something he didn’t once do in the first movie, and blowing stuff up. It’s fun, but if you’re looking for substance there’s not much to go on.
The ending really did it in for me. I was wondering when and how it would ever end, but when it did I wish the action could have just kept going to the credits instead. Rambo’s inevitable speech is so out of place and, though filled with emotion, just doesn’t work and comes off terrible. Personally, I do like the speech, but I just don’t think it works here.
“First Blood Part II” is a roller coaster of a movie, and if you loved the first I really recommend it. You just have to know that what you see is what you get.
