Ok let me start by saying that I was a big fan of Van Damme growing up, mostly because he was quite incredible as a martial artist. And if I were reviewing this when I was 12 it would be a 4 star classic. But I'm not 12 anymore, and I saw the film again about 3 years ago and now that I look back on things I can see how taste changes over time. The movie wasn't bad. But it is a far cry from being as brilliant as I thought it was growing up.
As far as a fighting movie, yeah it has some interesting fight scenes. But the story is weak, and the dialogue is pretty bad. This film is easily considered a B rated martial arts film by any standard these days. If you want to see Van Damme in his first American film, then by all means check it out, but keep in mind it is Van Damme and you won't be getting much in the way of an oscar winning performance.
