There have been movies that peer into the minds of serial killers and people fighting moral dilemmas, but "Ex Machina" is a tragic thought provoker that delves into the minds of computers and the men who program them, and will make you question everything about the true nature of artificial intelligence.

A sleek smart sci-fi movie with astonishing special effects and an excellent trio of performances by Alicia Vikander, Domhnall Gleeson, and Oscar Isaac.

This movie covers a lot of philosophical ground about concerning the hubris of man and the motivations of will. Do you believe an A.I. can have feelings? What are feelings? Is the desire for survival a feeling? When does control cross over from being in an experiment or being a slave to whatever system is in place. The real question about this movie is based wholly on trust. Does the head of the CEO trust the AI? Does the AI trust anyone? Does the protagonist programmer trust himself? Some parts of the writing may leave some viewers scratching their head about some of the decisions of the characters, but overall a nicely written piece performed well.

After spending most of his career collaborating with Danny Boyle on films like "Sunshine" and "28 Days Later," Alex Garland makes a compelling directorial debut with "Ex Machina," a smart, twisty/turny sci-fi story with a visual appeal that is among the best I've seen all year. All three of the lead actors do a fine job bringing subtlety to a film that has a lot of interesting things to say about humanity and today's technology, which is brought to you on a visually stunning and dramatically involving plate. "Ex Machina" is genuinely fucking cool.
