Wyatt Earp and his brothers bring justice to Tombstone, but when the notorious Clanton gang challenge their authority they enlist the aid of gentleman gunslinger Doc Holliday. Real life friends Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas were the perfect casting choices for their respective parts and they bring a lot of chemistry to their portrayal of the legendary figures of the old west. There are also small parts for western stalwarts Lee Van Cleef and Jack Elam as well as a very young Dennis Hopper and DeForest "Bones" Kelly. The direction from John Sturges - who also directed the classic The Magnificent Seven - is solid and unpretentious and his realistic portrayal of the gunfight itself favours old school grit over unnecessary flash. Perhaps a little old fashioned and a tad overlong, Gunfight At The O.K. Corral is still one of the better versions of the tale, although I personally prefer both Tombstone and My Darling Clementine. Well worth a look to fans of the traditional western however.
