The 'war' movie genre, as a whole, is hit-or-miss for me. Some are long, drawn out, and preachy. Other's are action heavy and dramatically overbearing. 'Patton' is a special case. It is a long endeavor, with much war violence, but it's true ambition is being a well written and performed character study. The film's ability to combine all these elements in entertaining fashion is why I hold it in higher regard. George C. Scott's terrific performance is the central aspect of the film. Without him, this wouldn't be half as good.
