Bateman plays an anti-hero type of character who balances dry wit, a crass mouth, and a small bit of cynicism while avoiding too much sympathy. The concoction comes off right, making his motive for joining the spelling bee seem justified with the character. Most all the jokes gave me a laugh. The funniest parts involve his competitive nature with the child contestants and his friendship with one of them. Solid comedy.
