I just wasn't able to really appreciate this movie. While I think Emile Hirsch is a pretty good actor, I didn't care for his characterization. It's similar to what I found grating about Ellen Page's Juno - an "I so have life figured out and you don't and I'm awesome for it" vibe. Midway through, I lost interest when Malone, who plays Hirsch's sister, tells us why he's going on this journey through the wilderness - it's their parents fault! Yes, the parents that loved and provided for him just didn't love him or his sister enough. Of course, we're not really shown their horrible parenting skills, so my problem is that they just come off as whiny spoiled rich kids who don't get their way. While the scenery is beautiful and the film is full of good actors, I didn't care for the main character, and that's a problem.
