A Slow, But Brilliant Meditation on Life

David Fincher brilliantly works out themes of mortality, love, and hope into an epic film, intertwined around the basic premise of F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story. The film's richly layered and often melancholy plot requires a bit of time to settle in. That may be the only complaint of the film - it's a meandering and slow-moving piece that builds to a strong thematic point, but takes a long time to get there. For those with little patience, the beauty of Benjamin Button may not be quick enough to reveal itself, but, for those who let the whole film wash over them, the result is satisfying.
