It's Complicated brought an interesting spin on a typical love story of a girl being stuck between to men. Just like Christine in Phantom of the Opera, Jane (Meryl Streep) has two equally appealing men vying for her attention. On one hand, you had Jake (Alec Baldwin), the ex-husband you ran away with a 20-something beauty. On the other, you have sweet, lovable Adam (Steve Martin) who is also recently divorced and just looking for someone to be happy with. As she goes through the rekindling of the old fame with Jake, Adam brings himself into her life treating her to the new found love and affection she had once lost with Jake. But she soon finds she will be facing the toughest decision when Jake leaves his wife for her just as Adam starts to really open up to her.
Yes, it was a long movie. Yes, it felt like she was never going to choose and subsequently end up alone but it cam through in the end. The writing was smart and witty all the way through. It's also nice to see Meryl Streep take a step away from roles such as the conniving boss in The Devil Wears Prada or the hateful nun in Doubt. Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin have lost none of their comedic talent and can still entertain today's viewer. Martin brings the laughs that hadn't changed since the days of Father of the Bride. Baldwin broke away from his usual oblivious boss that he portrays on 30 Rock. John Krasinski adds to the veteran comedians with his own pleasant humor and comedic timing that is engaging to any age. The cast was phenomenal and each had a certain quality to bring to enhance the film and almost make you feel like you were apart of the family.
