Movie Plots
Set in late nineteenth-century Lancashire, this story follows the fortunes of an overbearing boot-maker named Henry Hobson. As he yields increasingly to alcoholism and becomes ever more bellicose, Henry begins to lose control of his circumstances. When his headstrong eldest daughter, Maggie, declares that she will marry her father's meek yet talented cobbler, Willie Mossop, Henry's angry reaction drives the pair to leave and begin a store in rivalry of her father's. This precipitates a series of events at the end of which Henry must choose to cling to pride or to preserve his very well-being.
