It's a conversation piece.

I like Albert Brooks. He feels like...a friend of a friend from college. One of those guys that make you want to raise the roof when you see him across a crowded bar. Only once he crosses the bar and you start talking...half an hour later you realize that you haven't gotten a word in and you remember why you can never be friends. He amuses me in that way, so I decided to check out this movie because it was a pet project of his. The movie itself was not that funny. The funny thing is watching the special features. Twenty years after the movie is released, Albert Brooks does an interview where he shows clips from the movie and then explains why he thought that would be funny at the time. He's almost apologetic. The icing on the cake is when you watch the trailer. There may be alternate trailers, but the one in the special features is this bizarre 3-D spectacle where Albert Brooks basically gives a monologue that has nothing to do with the movie. It just makes me shake my head. Oh, Albert Brooks. You are a movie-making maverick. It's the kind of movie that you would have to watch for a sociology class and at the end you think, "Well, that was better than classwork."
