A cool-headed and stylish film noir featuring Burt Lancaster in his film debut and the always stunning Ava Gardner. The dialogue is sharp-witted and the atmosphere is brilliantly realized. The plot is sometimes too convoluted to be memorable but the direction overall is sometimes astounding. This is probably one of the best film noirs that no one has heard of. I sure haven't until I caught it by accident on TCM.
