Veteran director John Frankenheimer knows how to shoot action. So the dangerous racing that happens at the otherwise glamorous Grand Prix is a nice fit. James Garner leads an international cast. Now while it's amusing to see actors like Toshiro Mifune, Eva Marie Saint, and Yes Montand settle into their stock character roles, it does wind up a bit too shallow for the 3 hour running time. Still the car races and crash scenes are incredibly filmed.
