The combined talents of Anthony Hopkins and Cuba Gooding Jr. keep "Instinct" from falling apart. Even if it aims to juggle too many plot threads and postulate too many ideas to its audience. Loosely based off Daniel Quinn's philosophical novel "Ishmael" it features CGJ as a hotshot psychiatrist tasked with rehabilitating a formerly renowned anthropologist turned apparent murderer (Hopkins). Their intellectual sparring is the highlight of the film, even if it makes that '90s conceit of putting psychology through the wringer.
