Warren Beatty channels his inner Al Pacino as the mercurial mobster Bugsy Siegel who helped build Las Vegas while romancing the lovely if wily Virginia Hill. Beatty is a lot of fun to watch as Siegel who's often volatile and arrogant but is given enough quieter moments to flesh out his character. Sometimes it's quite funny but then switches to serious quickly. Levinson's direction is glossy and refined, giving the movie a New Hollywood look that Coppola and Scorsese would approve.
