I had seen this before but scarcely remember it. Robert Taylor is surprisingly effective as a crude and sadistic buffalo hunter. The mood is pretty dark for a fifties western, almost like The Searchers with John Wayne. There is a bit of light humor provided by Lloyd Nolan. It feels like a revisionist western from the '70s or '80s rather than its 1956 release date would suggest. Maybe that is why it was not a major hit at the time.
