This 'prequel' is a must for Ringu fans. It adds a whole new dimension to the story of Sadako; in fact it adds another Sadako, but that's as far as I can go without spoiling the plot.
Basudei tells what happened to Sadako after the death of her mother, when as a young adult she joins a theatre troupe in Tokyo. Sadako is young and beautiful, and attracts the affections of a young man in the troupe. The middle-aged director also takes a liking to her, but for more sinister reasons.
All this is complicated by a presence which seems to follow Sadako...a presence which is pure evil. As in Ringu, the tone is low-key as the horror very gradually unfolds. The ending is terrific, if your nerve holds and you can watch it!
This is a very worthy precursor to Ringu. Highly recommended!
