A Slight Return to Form for Oliver Stone

It doesn't have the same emotional and thematic impact of older Stone films, but Savages displays a charisma and energy that has been missing from the great director's last few duds. The ensemble cast meshes well to tell a sizzling story of betrayal and revenge, set mostly against the desert heat of Baja and Southern California. The film tries to reach at themes bigger than it is, but it succeeds in presenting interesting characters with multiple sides of morality; no one character is wholly good, but none are wholly evil either (except for maybe Benicio Del Toro's heartless hitman.) A less potent Stone film, but, still, a stylistic and entertaining treat.
