"Shakespeare in Love" strives to be many things: a period piece, a romance, a screwball comedy, a showbiz picture, and a fictionalized telling of creative inspiration. It succeeds, even if it never reaches the greatness a premise like this deserves.

So this the movie that beat Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture at the Oscars...WTF?. Shakespeare in Love isn't a bad movie as people are pointing out to be just because it won Best Picture at the Oscars, but Saving Private Ryan was overall a better movie and should have won, just saying. The acting was good, the directing was fine and the sets and costumes were good as well.

One of the most criminally underappreciated Best Picture winners of all-time. Yes, I think Saving Private Ryan is better, but I absolutely loved Shakespeare in Love!

Gently amusing deconstruction of the life of Shakespeare that's nowhere near as witty or clever as its reputation suggests. There are actually far more laughs in an episode of Blackadder II. Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead is far, far better.

Using wit, symbolism, and some charismatic acting, "Shakespeare in Love" weaves a clever romantic tale around the rich world of Shakespearean England. The film is light-hearted and playful, taking cues from Shakespeare's more Puckish comedies and, all historical inaccuracy aside, is a lot of fun.

"Shakespeare In Love" is by far one of the best movies that has come out in the past decade and a year. Its a charming, witty, understandable story with some of the best romanticisms about it. I thoroughly enjoyed Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes, and Ben Affleck is great when he's not the lead. I loved this movie.

This film may not have deserved to win an academy award, but it did so for a reason. The movie was powerful and the characters were so tangible. It made a Shakespeare story really relatable for a person living in the 21st century.Thumbs up!

It was pretty good, with a great cast. It's funny how Gwyneth Paltrow stole this script from her best friend at the time Winona Ryder. Now GP is married to a rock star and Winona can't get arrested, er, actually well my favorite part is when Shakespeare is trying to get Ben Affleck in his play (Romeo & Juliet) so he says the play is called Mercutio and that he has the leading role.

This is easily the worst best picture academy award winner I have seen. I have issues with certain historical inaccuracies - especially ones as schmaltzy as this one. The acting is decent but the story is just stomach churning.
