Looking back, a hokey bombastic epic feels a little beneath Stanley Kubrick. But there's still plenty to respect about "Spartacus," not least being it's commanding performances, musings on humanity, and envisioning of ancient Rome that remains ingrained in cinema culture today.

A masterpiece of classic epic filmmaking. Establishing early Kubrick's style, Spartacus is a reminder towards the Hollywood of the modern era of what a work of art is. Grandiose epic proportions. 93/100

One of the better swords-and-sandals epics. It feels more satisfying and has a great ending. However, if you are looking for a good Kubrick film, this is not it.

A sprawling epic that does an excellent job of balancing extensive battle and action scenes with establishing believable and motivated characters. The ending is a true classic and Kirk Douglas dominates with charisma.

Truly epic. It seems nitpicky to question some of the scenes and the length of the film when you have some of the most passionate and stirring moments on film ever. All together now: "I'm Spartacus!"

Every so-called "sword & sandals" film owes a debt to Spartacus. Some come close, but none can quite equal the original "gladiator" film. Powerful and memorable - Spartacus is the top in its genre.

Gladiator is so much like this movie. Douglas is perfect for Spartacus and the sets are also great. Very few movies can produce a hero like this one. If you like gladiator and have some patience, this movie is for you!
