It cleary wants to spring to life and be a great fantasy adventure of our wildest dreams, but gets held back by ambitions that lack subtlety and substance. The plot becomes more burdensome the more characters it adds, not more fun.

'Stardust' is a light and fluffy fantasy along the lines of a 'Princess Bride' type. The plot is pleasantly simple and straight-forward. A bevy of varied characters show up in rapid succession. All of them revel in, while simultaneously subverting, their fairy tale archetypes. Usual expected situations have a familiar set-up, only to take a somewhat surprising turn. Even though these moments exist, the film is still confined to an average genre story. The hero and his eventual lover stay safely in those standards, as well. Left a bit more for me to desire. As a whole, it's a breezy fun watch. An easygoing good time.

A movie that people liked but I hate it.

Matthew Vaughn is a talented director and he has a talented cast at his disposal in telling this entertaining adventure story. The film has a definite "Princess Bride" attitude to it - a mixture of visuals and action-adventure style fight scenes and sarcastic and witty humor. Robert De Niro is the scene-stealer for me, in a role that is reminiscent of the crazy character he played in Gilliam's Brazil - so far out of the Bobby De Niro box that it's a fun and fresh departure for the actor. In all, I definitely went in expecting a by-the-books costume adventure and came out enjoying the movie a great deal.

I couldn't get through the first half hour. The reviews all seem so positive, maybe I should have stuck it out; but it was just so hard to...

Everyone loved this movie, but I just didn't see it. I hated every second of sitting in the theatre, listening to the awful dialogue and watching the most horrid of performances by Michelle Pfeiffer, Claire Danes, Jason Flemyng, and yes, even the great Robert De Niro. I laughed little, felt for the characters less, and suggested this film to nobody I knew.

A really interesting fantasy story. Though the movie is not as good as the book it is still really well done. The characters are very fun and the special effects are well done. A great modern fairy tale for the whole family. The best part of the story is the ghosts.

This is one of the few movies that I actually like better than the book. The book was awesome, don't get me wrong, but the movie was just so reminiscent of The Princess Bride, another movie I think I like better than the book, that I just couldn't help but adore it. The movie is far funnier than the novel, there's no doubt about that, but it does it without completely ruining the integrity of the story. Robert DeNiro gives the performance of a lifetime I feel, and I honestly didn't recognize Claire Danes until quite far into watching the film the first time, which is a good thing in my book. All around, a great film for the adventure/fantasy film lover in all of us.
