Even without the politically charged ending of the original, "The Thing" surpasses it with a relentless amount of dread and gore, and a concept that's both faithful and enhancing at the same time.

"Cheating bitch." 38 years ago, this movie both bombed and received poor reviews from critics; same thing with Blade Runner, which was released at the same time. This just confirms that even in 1982, people were complete idiots. 'The Thing' is a classic body horror thriller where the mystery and suspense kept audiences on edge for years. It's one of the best John Carpenter movie behind 'Halloween'. This movie and Blade Runner stood the test of time as Sci-Fi masterpieces.

It's certainly not a bad movie at all, and I understand why people love it. I was never quite a fan of it. I don't find it scary - I find it repetitive and boring.

Kurt Russell, as MacReady, is a helicopter pilot who finds out about the creature’s nature. The effects and scary moments were present. Unfortunately, the plot and screenplay was inconsistent. It failed to bring out character development and real source of the things. Score was thrilling and freaky and acting was descent. Conclusion of the film was horrendous and pace was slow. The original still reigns supreme, though the sequel was not as entertaining. The Thing shows how one can act in terms of dire situations and trust in people.

Aside from Halloween, The Thing is John Carpenter's best film. It creates an eerie, claustrophobic atmosphere that ramps up the tension with each scene. Though the gore factor is high, the film actually revolves around putting real characters in high stakes situations than it does simply exploiting gore for the sake of gore.

So I had high hopes for this movie simply because of the cult following in recent years. I kind of liked the 1950s version but felt it lacked story and realism. This one succeeds at a much higher level. The characters are a little stupid at times but overall a good flick. Actually more similar to Invasion of the Body Snatchers but not as good.

The prime example of how to do a horror movie dealing with paranoia. The Thing isn't just a set-piece after set-piece of excellent effects, but is an excellent study of men who are put into a situation where they're dealing with something new, and can not trust anyone else in the room. Very intense and well constructed movie that sadly was not appreciated at the time of it's original release. A small little E.T. overshadowed this little gem big time. Luckily The Thing has been later recognised as the masterpiece it is.
