A nail-biting thriller that also serves as a melancholic mood-piece that captures the paranoia of 1970s America. Robert Redford is convincing as the bookworm turned fugitive after he stumbles upon a sinister conspiracy. Dunaway is his alluring love interest while Max von Sydow plays the cunning assassin hired to track him down. It may be a half hour longer than necessary but it feels eerily prescient for future audiences wary of global affairs and American politics.

In this unique thriller, Sydney Pollack builds effective tension around a smart cat-and-mouse game involving layers of intrigue and deception. Redford is surefooted as the hero, but Max von Sydow is more memorable as a laconic, but imposing contract killer. My only complaint is that Redford's character is made out to be a bookish accountant-like character, but quickly becomes a slick action movie star, which skirts believability.
