A disturbing and dark tale that is also rather dull. Some flashes of signature Gilliam visual flair, but mostly a weird and inaccessible tale that is generally unpleasant.

After watching the interview with Gilliam, I got more confused than I wanted to be. The thing is that the movie is too disturbing, but he speaks about the innocence of child. I understand his point, but I don't agree at all with his way of portraying that innocence. Beyond that, the movie is technically fantastic and it achieves the intended purpose. Very personal film by the director. Remarkable performances. It could compete easily with Pan Labyrinth. It's very similar.

This is a story of Jeliza Rose, a girl whose parents are junkies and leaves her to herself. She talks to herself, squirrels, dolls, her retarded neighbor. It is the best film of 2006 that I have seen. Thankfully I saw this in the theater. A beautiful performance by Jodelle Ferland.
