"Transformers" by Yojimbo

Transformers is a summer special effects extravaganza starring Shia LaBeouf as the descendant of an Arctic explorer who gets caught up in a war between rival factions of a robotic alien race. Michael Bay, the scourge of modern cinema, once again foregoes anything so unnecessary as a plot, interesting characters or meaningful dialogue instead preferring to fill the screen with as much CGI and explosions as possible, using the pretty young cast as window dressing in case the adolescent audience feel like a self congratulatory wank after the dust has settled. Admittedly, the special effects are magnificent, the robots superbly designed and animated and as they rocket around the screen, guns blazing and constantly morphing as they go, it makes for a breathtaking spectacle. Unfortunately, as …

Transformers are cool again

Fantastic. This seemed like a horrible idea, taking a cheesy anime geared at children from the 80's and turning it into a live action blockbuster for adults 20 years later. But it was genius. All those kids who had grown up with it and were now adults not only got to relive a bit of their childhood through it but also experiance something new in the franchise they used to love. I believe this movie has started a trend (unfortunately it will probably be a bad one) of animated 80's tv shows being turned into high budget movies. But the reason for this is because this one was go good. Shia LeBouf was excellent in his role and the fact that they brought back the voice of megatron (at least in the american version) was excellent. This movie single handedly made transformers cool again, a feat …

simply amazing

Michael Bay's Transformers is an adventure that has all of the components of a great summer action movie. Shia LaBeouf is perfect as Sam Witwicky, a character who is likeable, funny, and somewhat dorky. Sam's character is quintessential because he does not require any of the cool factors, which all garner towards the Transformers themselves. The transformers are like hundred foot tall action figures, which for both the audience and director Michael Bay are entertaining to look at, but even more entertaining to destroy; however, just as entertaining as the destruction are the supporting actors. Although the situation in the film is apocalyptic, it still loosens up by having every single character serve as comic relief whether it is John Turturro, Kevin Dunn, Anthony Anderson, or the late …

Autobots, transform and product place!

I really liked this movie. I did. Probably more than most movies I'd give 3 stars too. It's just that I REALLY liked the parts I liked and the parts that I didn't like struck me as serious flaws.
What did I like about this movie? Gosh, I wonder. Giant robots that transform into cars and tanks and stuff that fight each other... how can you go wrong? The effects were amazing, and getting the original voice for Optimus Prime (possibly one of the coolest hero characters ever) was a great bit of nostalgia.
Shia LaBeouf knocked his role out of the park, despite the fact that the writers got a little carried away with the "look, he's an awkward teenager" bits. Life as a 16-year-old is awkward, we get it, I don't need it beaten into me.
So... what DIDN'T I like? The title …

Transformers is good, just not quite great

An entertaining summer action movie, Transformers excels in a places, but lacks in others. If you're in the mood for a movie that looks great, has great music, and has intense action packed scenes, this movie is worth watching. If you're looking for an engaging plot and exceptional acting, this is not the movie for you.
Playing with Transformers as a kid, this movie really took me back. I knew a good portion of the storyline before it even started, which is a good thing. Basically there are 'good' Transformers and of course, 'bad' ones. The bad ones are trying to take over the universe, pretty basic. The 'good' ones are doing whatever they can to save Earth, and humans, and refuse to ever cause them harm. This is a problem because the movie is more about the humans witnessing …

Transforming Summer Movies Again

[Update: I saw this movie again and still feel the same way. It is the best summer movie since Armageddon (if you liked that movie) and is a truly good movie. Light on the cheese and very well paced.]
When you think of summer movies what is the first one to pop into your head? Depending on how old you are it might be ID4 to some - also known as Independence Day. Others are War of the Worlds, Star Wars, Mission Impossible, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Armageddon. Add this one to the list. While there are a lot of short comings, The Transformers is one of the better brainless movies I have seen probably since Armageddon (and I personally really enjoyed War of the Worlds).
Let me explain why I gave it 3.5 stars. Upon first viewing, I may have overlooked a lot of the cheese …

Transformers - What I Expected to Meet the Eye
Chris Kavan - wrote on 07/07/2007
Transformers is pretty much the pinnacle of summer movie season. It has a director who is know more for explosions than exposition. It has the "it" actor and amazingly hot co-star. It has enough eye-popping special effects to keep your head spinning until winter. It has about the perfect mix of comedy, action and drama. But no matter how much you dress up a pig, it's still a pig. Transformers, being the summer blockbuster it was meant to be, is ultimately style over substance and while entertaining, it's still a pure popcorn flick.
Things that work: Shia LaBeouf is a great choice for leading man. He looks comfortable, has a great time with both the comedy and action and even pairs well with the somewhat wooden (though totally hot) Megan Fox. The special effects are remarkable - even …

Robots in disguise? Yeah, disguised as "awesome".

I've been waiting for this one to come out for awhile. Needless to say it could have easily disappointed me based on my extremely high expectations. This movie was smart, funny, action packed, and had fricking rediculous special effects. "Why does it not get your coveted 4 star rating" you ask? With Michael Bay at the helm and the backing of Steven Spielberg the fight scenes should have (and could have) been much less confusing.
Shia LaBeouf, you get better with every movie.
Josh Duhamel, you get better with every movie... "Turistas" and "Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!" haven't exactly set the bar all that high though have they?
Megan Fox, quit calling me... it was one night of passion. I love you, I'm just not IN love with you.
I give this movie 3.5 out of a possible 4 …
