The singing in place of talking may not be the most ideal format for storytelling, but when combined with the masterful cinematography and beautifully colored set-design, "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" scoops you up into a swirling cyclone of art and music so enchanting that you can't help but be amazed.

Having every line sung and not spoken comes off as inventive, not gimmicky, and the story itself is involving and heartbreaking. Sort of a French throwback to 50's Hollywood musicals that is also visually arresting.

Unique, and absolutely heartbreaking. Once you get past a script that'ss sung from beginning to end, and the melodies and lovely french accents get into your head, the experience becomes trancendant.

Unfortunately, everything is sung and nothing is spoken. With just Catherine Deneuve this movie doesn't work. I highly recommend The Young Girls of Rochefort over this one.
