Pretentious and overrated, I'm not sure what I was supposed to take away from "Withnail and I."

Withnail & I is an absurd, darkly funny, and extremely witty comedy that places razor-sharp gems in the mouth of the often drunk washed up acting duo of Withnail and Marwood. The film is at its best when the dialogue is allowed to flow in freeform scenes that play to the actors' comic timing and line-reading.

Alcoholic Withnail and Marwood go around while they are waiting for a part, daily life revolves around getting coins to use in the meters that provide gas or electricity, going to collect benefits, and waiting for the pubs to open so they can drink. The picture consisted of constant babbling and searching from the 2 leads. It had such pointless direction and constant rudeness. Only thing worthy to make this good was the location and soundtrack. It was so bad I had to put it off halfway thru the movie. Withnail and I was definitely not my kind of flick.

Withnail & I is like a mix of the 80's British comedy "Young Ones" paired up with "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". It don't consider this movie laugh out loud funny except for a few scenes, but it was still humorous to watch.

Funny, original and fiercely Independent, Withnail & I is a truly unique film with a great cast and a truly inspired premise.... Its 1969... London... and we meet our two out-of-work, out-of-money and nearly completely out-of-their minds actor protagonist (I... you never do learn his name) and antagonist (Withnail played by the brilliant Richard E. Grant). Who proceed to spend the entire movie welching off Withnails flamboyantly closeted Rich Uncle and their profoundly poetic drug dealer as they very slowly are drawn emotionally apart. George Harrison happened to Exec. Produce this little piece of mastery. Make sure you catch it on the Criterion Collection DVD. Don't miss this one. You won't be sorry.

A very clever, funny, intelligent and criminally underrated british comedy. One of my favorite dark comedies contains some of the most humorous and memorable scenes I've seen in a comedy.
