"The Big Sleep" contains some of the slyest characters and dialogue noir films of the 1940s had to offer.

Private eye Philip Marlowe is hired to investigate the blackmail of a young heiress but when the corpses start to pile up, he realises that the case has more than meets the eye. I love Film Noir, and Bogart for me is the best of its leading men. Bogart and Bacall have one of the greatest screen partnerships and Chandler was one of the best exponents of the art of the detective story. The plot has more twists and turns than a sidewinder that's swallowed a corkscrew, it involves a femme fatale who could melt a polar ice cap and dialogue that's more hard boiled than beelzebub's breakfast egg. It just doesn't get any better than this. The greatest Noir ever made.

Such an iconic noir - everything is classic, from the beautifully lit black and white cinematography to the slyly written lines. Bogart gives a weathered and rough performance, one of the best of his career. It's easy to forget that a lot of things that are now detective movie cliches were done here first.

Based on the Raymond Chandler novel, with a screenplay partially written by Faulkner, this flick pretty much sets the standard for classic Noir movies. Which is to say, a lot of it will seem totally cliche because it's been done so many times since. The script is phenomenol, if you like smart-alec-y one-liners and comebacks. Bogart taught Bond how to be Bond.

I know this is supposed to be a classic film, but I didn't like it at all.

I take back my original review. This is actually a great movie. Bogart's best besides Sierra Madre. More complex and engaging than Maltese Falcon. i like the characters and the girls better. See it as 40's mystery and you will enjoy!
