Charles Laughton had only one directing credit to his name, and it was this unnerving noirish thriller.

Superbly paced and Robert Mitchum takes his spot for me as one of the best cinematic villains of all time with his self-appointed preacher persona. Beautifully shot - this is a chilling film that will stick with you.

A haunting tale that is photographed beautifully. The entire movie is told from the point-of-view of the children and it adds a nightmarish quality to the chase. The addition of biblical morality only makes it all the more interesting.

Robert Mitchum turns in a historic performance as a charming, but purely evil, child killer. The film's dark, chiroscoro photography and religious symbolism make it a haunting and frightening horror ride.

The height - if not the introduction - of Neo-Expressionist filmmaking, 'The Night of the Hunter' is the calling card of a great filmmaker who never was. With brilliant performances (even from the 'chillld...reeen') and evocative cinematography, 'Hunter' is a textbook example in how to effortlessly elicit suspense and menace. You will never think of the hymn 'Leaning on the Everlasting Arms' in quite the same way again.

Started kind of outdated and very 50s, but then the thing started to take color and turned to be a masterpiece. The visuals and the mood of the flick are perfect. The movie itself is rare. Note that the director only made 2 flicks, and this one was the last. Again, a rare gem that shouldnt be missed at all. One of the best american flicks ever.

A brillant performance by Robert Mitchum propels Night of the Hunter from a good movie to an all time classic. Unfortunately, somehow this movie has escaped the attention of much of the general public. Its defiantely worth seeing though, if nothing else for the twisted and heartless preacher character that Mitchum so artfully created.

A great movie staring a great actor in Mitchum. The plot is good and it is well acted. It does drag at times and the music sometimes dates the movie, but overall recommended to all thrill seekers.
