Not many pictures stretch as far in both directions of comedy and drama as "Sullivan's Travels" does, and do so to be considered a masterwork of both.

Beyond meta-film and beyond screwball comedy, Sullivan's Travels is a breathtaking adventure ahead of its time. The process of filmmaking inspiration had never met such an unusual turn, but Sturges was the man for the job. This may be the first masterpiece to celebrate the movie industry with predominant passion (and some inside spoofs and jokes). Veronica Lake is a stunning fox in here! 98/100

Whimsical and charming screwball comedy with a great turn by Joel McCrea and an excellent performance by Veronica Lake. Sweet natured to a fault with not only a great sense of humor but an appreciation for it.

Mildly funny film that is equal parts satire, screwball comedy and melodrama. I didn't find all of these shades to work well together, but I was entertained by the eccentric performances.

A fascinating social commentary on entertainment vs. reality that also manages to be very funny at times, in a madcap, screwball kind of way. In my opinion, this is one of the more dense Sturges films and, if you don't watch it with a meticulous eye, you'll likely miss the point.

Not for me. It tires to be funny, tries to be a drama and it tries to be good. It is below average on all 3 tries. How did this make it into the new AFI top 100? I can think of at least 100 more deserving movies.

This Preston Sturges comedy always felt a bit overrated to me. There are some good lines and McCrea gives a knockout performance as the movie director, but it really doesn't live up to the hype. Final Grade: C+

Unfortunately, I never got into it that much. There are better films by both Prerston Sturges and Veronica Lake.
