Harold and Maude review

A story of wealthy eclectic boy named Harold Chasen (Bud Cort) fascinated with death whose mother, Mrs. Chasen (Vivian Pickles), wants him to get married. He encounters and meets Maude (Ruth Gordon), who also has a passion of attending funerals. Harold becomes fascinated with Maude’s fervor and perception of life and the pair becomes close. One of many laughable scenes was one of his attempts at suicide with the gun, bloody restroom and the girl who was an actor introduced to Harold.

Spectacular screenplay with memorable quotes: Maude – “You can't let the world judge you too much.” “Well, if some people get upset because they feel they have a hold on some things, I'm merely acting as a gentle reminder: here today, gone tomorrow, so don't get attached to things” Harold …

Words cannot express how much I loved this movie. I knew I would. It's my favorite era of movies, and it makes films like Garden State and The Royal Tennenbaums look totally overdone. It's my favorite type of movie--the mood piece. Quirky, absurd characters. Complex relationships. Irony. Cat Stevens. Everything I love, all rolled into one. The acting is AMAZING. It reminds me of The Graduate. The costumes are also fantastic. Halloween costume, here I come.

The only negative thing I can say is this stupid Cat Steven's song that is sung on the piano by Ruth Gordon and then repeatedly plays throughout. Cheese City. "If you wanna be you be you, if you wanna be me be me, something about doing things and being free..." Oh man. If it weren't for that, this movie would get an A.

At a funeral, Harold befriends Maude, a 79-year-old woman who has a zest for life. She and Harold spend much time together during which she exposes him to the wonders and possibilities of life. After rejecting his mother's three attempts to set him up with a potential wife, and committing fake suicide in front of all of them, Harold announces that he is to be married to Maude. However, Maude has a surprise for Harold that is to change his life forever.

Harold and Maude, considered one of the great classic films of the 1970's and one of the great films of all time. One film which has always been on my "to watch" list and other …
