A gothic cautionary tale filled with cynicism and imagery that repeatedly verges on blasphemy.

Bunuel assumes a depressing view on charity - one in which the good works of others are misplaced by being bestowed upon undeserving and wretched creatures - but it's a powerful and thought-provoking one, nonetheless. Differing from the director's more surreal work, this is a pretty linear film with some fearless performances and symbolism.

I can see why this caused such an uproar for the Catholic church - Buñuel certainly doesn't have any problem with startling imagery (including a twisted take on "The Last Supper") but beliefs aside, this is truly a remarkable and powerful film and could be considered the pinnacle of Buñuel's work.
