This is quite possibly one of the most derivative, uninspiring, cliched, and otherwise dull excuses for a horror film that I have ever seen in my entire life. The perdurable misery of this Gothic nonsense is slightly ameliorated by the admittedly clever twist, but for the rest of the film the conventionality of proceedings is more likely to elicit a feeling of suicidal boredom than plenary fear.

Definitely a slow burn of a horror film that somehow manages to become more of an emotional drama by the end. The atmosphere and cinematography are beautiful and, aside from one or two scenes, the scare factor is mostly based around subtle mood and tension than "boo" moments. The ending moves away from the horror, but still resolved nicely for me.

This film is brilliant! The atmosphere was excellent, few films scare me - but I can't watch this one alone.

Everything I read about this film prior to seeing it led me to believe that it was truly scary. It was suspenseful at times, but not scary. In fact some of the time it was slow and boring. I don't think it belongs in the horror category at all.

Action: 3 / 3, Comedy: 0 / 2, Good vs Evil: 1 / 1, Love/Sex: 1 / 1, Special Effects: 1 / 1, Plot: 1 / 1, Music: 1 / 1 = 8 / 10 or 80%, which is 3 / 4 stars. Horror fans don't get much cinema of this quality and it has everything to offer including spectacle! del Toro's influence is unmistakable and the wonderful cast, characters make the story their own.

The Orphanage will not disappoint. It is an eerie movie that has a few chills and really creepy scenes. The acting is very good and although I was reading subtitles I got lost in the story and didn't even notice. I can't say much about the ending without giving it away, but it is one that is a bit shocking and reminds me of something Hitchcock would have done. It can't really be called a "horror" in my book. Even though it was creepy and had a couple of butt-clenching scenes it was more of a thriller/mystery. That isn't a bad thing, but if you are watching this to have a good, jump out of your seat, fright night, look elsewhere. Take a look if you want a quality film and you have already watched Pan's Labyrinth.

A ghost story that doesn't abide by the usual rules, it achieves an hypnotic hold and reminds us it's what we don't see that inspires fear. A disarmingly chilling fantasy with excellent direction, atmospheric music and a convincing central role. Final Grade: A
