"The Lady From Shanghai" comfortably fits the basic noir template, but better films like it exist, and Orson Welles has certainly helmed more complex, compelling, and atmospheric works.

Orson Welles sports an ill advised Irish accent as a seaman who winds up caught between murderous villains and a crafty femme fatale. There's a cool shoot-out at the end set in a hall of mirrors. Some weird imagery and an incomprehensible narration bog it down though.

It took me about an hour to get into this film, if it was anyone else but Orson Welles I would have turned it off long before. But at about the hour mark, the story took an interesting turn and I actually started to enjoy it. Could have done without the fake Irish brogue and the slow beginning, but the terrific ending made up for it. Recommended to patient audiences only!
