The steady build up is worth the movie's deep characters and engaging story.

Another film that is left up to audience interpretation. Personally, I don't have any input on the matter. I'm more interested in individual scenes and the terrific performances from Duvall and Spacek. It starts off with a simple, but strong, narrative that loosens up gradually over time to reveal more ambiguity. I was enjoying it as a quiet drama clash between personalities, all the while feeling something was off in the back of my mind. The initial big turn in the middle of the film is the obvious break in the flow. I won't say too much more, except that the rest is wildly unpredictable. The dream-like qualities shine brighter as the reality is slowly stripped away piece-by-piece.

Some people might view this as typical Altman - meandering, sometimes plotless, and at times, incoherent, but I just found wading through the layered film tedious. I can appreciate some of Altman's freeform work, but, in my opinion, this isn't his sharpest effort.

A wonderful movie about a girl named Millie, but everyone calls her Pinky (Sissy Spacek). She notices a girl at work who is so much like herself but thinks she is so much better (Shelly Duvall). What ensues is a wandering mess (in a good way) that inspired the likes of David Lynch, more specifically provided the foundation for films like Mulholland Dr. and Lost Highway to exist.
