The groundbreaking and still influential "Black Narcissus" exposes the limitations of holy vows under the most extreme circumstances, and its breathtaking art direction still holds up even if all its melodrama doesn't.

Beautifully shot but ridiculously dated melodrama about nuns resisting temptation in the form of roguish David Farrar amidst the quaint and "child-like" natives who "all look alike". Worth watching for the visuals (many shots seem like a framed oil painting) but the hysterical melodrama and stodgy dialogue will put many (myself included) off.

The racism was a little too thick for my tastes. But, the plot was somewhat interesting. And, the scenery was amazing!

There's a lot going on here and some of the social and religious subplots didn't quite work for me, as they were approached too matter-a-factly and without a lot of depth. What really does work, though, is the love triangle that drives the film's striking climax. Kathleen Byron, as a mentally unhinged nun, steals every scene with her mad gaze.

I don't agree that this is among Michael Powell's best films but most people seem to enjoy it.
