In his first starring role, James Dean proves to be a terrific dramatic actor. Though, being a bit older than the part, he encompasses all the strife and angst of a troubled teen perfectly. It's a great emotional performance in an emotionally charged story.

The plight of a beaten down family is realized beautifully amid the setting of pre-WWII wine country. James Dean is fantastic here - completely engrossed in his character and hitting every right emotional note. This is one of the best Steinbeck adaptations, along with Grapes of Wrath, and Dean's best performance of his short career.

I didn't think I'd like this movie as much as I did. I certainly didn't think it'd wind up being an anti-war movie. The fact that it is, made it all that much better. I still don't quite understand James Dean's constant slouching though.

James Dean initial offering comes from a great source: John Steinbeck. Proving that dysfunctional families have been around a long time, along with teen angst, Dean stands out. The rest of the cast also shines and the emotion will hit you.
