Frederic Henry (Gary Cooper), an American serving as an ambulance driver in the Italian Army and befriends Italian Major Rinaldi (Adolphe Menjou), a doctor. Frederick is wounded wherein he finds himself in the hospital where Catherine now works. Both become close and express their undying love. Middle portion was dragging and the war and relationship kept going back and forth with no relation. The rest of the film's aspects such as the realism of war was well portrayed and the performances were solid. Screenplay was romantic and set pieces believable. A Farewell to Arms is one of the few precursors of the romantic war genre.
