It's an engrossing tale of deceit and revenge with no blood, no violence--not even much in the way of raised voices. But it's not sterile or sweet either. The Henry James story is artfully done, with Olivia De Havilland perfectly holding its center. Ralph Richardson, as her unsupportive father, is another plus in this outstanding production. In beautifully-photographed black-and-white.

A surprisingly little known film, given the pedigree of its director and stars (and the author of its source work), but well worth seeking out. De Havilland's performance is a marvel; she transforms from mousy, kindhearted wallflower to embittered, cold-hearted harridan without every seeming labored or unnatural. But in so transforming she never loses one's sympathy. She fully convinces you of the righteousness of her actions. Truly, hell hath no fury . . . .
