I generally enjoy westerns, especially about outlaws. But Jesse James, the 1939 megahit starring Tyrone Power and Henry Fonda happens to be a real bore when it's not lionizing hardened criminals as these 'golly gee' type good old boys. Its populist leanings have a nasty undercurrent of the old Antebellum south, complete with a faithful black servant. Perhaps it's unintentional but it leaves a nasty aftertaste.
