Bette Davis hones in her talent as a daring actress willing to take roles other stars shunned. She plays Julie, a proud haughty Southern belle whose unladylike conduct drives away her paramour. When the Civil War and a plague breaks out, she is given the chance to set things right. Davis carries this movie and William Wyler directs it well. Henry Fonda's reserved but dignified bearing is an ideal counterbalance to Bette Davis''s more extroverted performance. The hagiographic treatment of the Antebellum South is sketchy at best and does lead to some uncomfortable moments.

... in the sight of the Lord and her name was Jezebel. Bette Davis is daring in this, and she actually was pregnant for part of the film (by director William Wyler) and had an abortion. You can see her with different weights during the film. This isn't even close to the greatest plot in the world and the ending is a bit cheesy. See only if you are a Bette or Wyler fan.
