Locked-room mystery that benefits from Michael Curtiz’s direction and the vital casting William Powell as the classy detective Philo Vance. The actual case is kind of uninteresting and feels like a ripoff of Agatha Christie.

Pretty good Philo Vance whodunit, full of whos. An overabundance of bland, middle-aged white men with moustaches muddles the presentation. Not-so-bland, middle-aged, moustachioed white guy William Powell is snappy as Detective Vance, sewing the many twists and turns up neatly at the end. Also entertaining is Eugene Pallette as the police sergeant who too-hastily jumps to conclusions at every turn, always in error.
